Kate Moss? No. Sea Moss. | TikTok Myth Busters
Welcome back to "TikTok Told You What?!" This week, we are discussing Sea Moss, the magical unicorn that lives under the sea and, according to TikTok, can do just about anything.
✨ Better skin.
✨ Better digestion.
✨ Better energy.
✨ Better hair.
✨ Better life.
At this point I'm surprised it hasn't been nominated for public office!
Jokes aside, let's talk facts.
Sea moss does contain vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.
So that's at least good news.
The less exciting news?
There is currently limited evidence showing that eating sea moss directly translates into clearer, younger-looking skin.
Also, and this is the most important (and somewhat concerning part), sea moss can cause very serious adverse reactions like thyroid dysfunction, digestive distress, and heavy metal toxicity.
Because the seaweed acts like a sponge, its nutritional profile varies drastically by harvest location, making it impossible to know exactly how much of a nutrient or contaminant you are ingesting.
This is where social media "expertise" gets dangerous.
Skinfluencers love taking facts like "contains nutrients that support overall health"
and turning them into catchy misinformation that makes us think our skin will be flawless by next Tuesday.
Professional Verdict
Can sea moss be part of a healthy diet?
Maybe and only if consuming the most regulated, quality-controlled, scientifically-proven formula from the highest reputable source.
Can it replace sunscreen, retinoids/A-HA, professional treatments, or a consistent skincare routine?
Sadly, no. The ocean cannot save you.
