Why no one talks about menopause and why we should
Menopause is one of the most universal experiences women share… and somehow, one of the least talked about.
We spend decades discussing hormones, fertility, and aging - but when it comes to menopause, the conversation often disappears.
Tell me why?
- Cultural Stigmas and Ageism: Menopause is linked with aging and infertility, leading to inadvertent shame
- Lack of Medical Training and Misdiagnosis: Research shows only 1 in 5 OBGYN residents receive formal training in menopause.
- Fear and Misinformation: past controversies surrounding hormone therapy lead to doctors shying away from HT altogether.
- Normalization of Suffering: Society teaches women that enduring symptoms is just "part of life."
Here's the truth:
Reproduction is a choice but menopause is not.
And yet many women enter this phase feeling unprepared, confused, and unsure about what’s “normal.” You and me both, sista! That's why I went on this week long expedition to get us answers!
So let’s start with a few grounding truths:
- The average age of menopause is 51
- Perimenopause (the transition phase) can begin up to 10 years earlier (yes, early 40s!)
- Symptoms can show up gradually—and often subtly at first
This isn’t just a hormonal shift, it’s a full-body transition that can affect sleep, mood, metabolism, and your skin.
So where do we even begin?
- Start by paying attention—notice changes without judgment.
- Keep a simple log of sleep, skin, mood, and energy to help you spot patterns over time.
- Simplify routines (in life and especially when it comes to your skin!). Focus on barrier support like hydration, gentle cleansing, and less exfoliation.
We’ll be sharing more each week—because understanding what’s happening is the first step to navigating it well. 🤍
And if you've been noticing changes in your skin this season, you're not alone! Reach out with your challenges and we'll work through them together!
